Mapping Beauty consists of 12 drawings, done in 2016, 17 and 18. My inspiration is the Yongzheng 12 Beauties which are in the collection of the Palace Museum in Beijing. In each drawing I compare and bring together the old beauty Nala Shi and a beauty from the present. In the first 8 drawings Dandan is my model and in the last 4 drawings Li Ping (Pink) is my model. Dandan is also the young woman in my poem film Pygmalion Bride. During my summer and winter residency in Beijing I met Li Ping in the Temple Bar. She's the bartender and manager of the Temple Bar. In the weekend I often danced in the Temple Bar and inspired by Pink and Beijing Nightlife I composed a song A Blink of Pink, which also was the title of my soloshows and performances at the Black Sesame Space in Beijing and Witteveen Visual Arts in Amsterdam.
All drawings are done with colored pencil and watercolor on paper. The size of the first drawings is rather small (around 75 x 45 cm). The others are around 1 meter high or 90 x 80 cm. Only the eleventh is large, 215 x 100 cm.
Mapping Beauty 2 and 3 are in the collection of the Fries Museum. Mapping Beauty 1 and 7 are in private collection.
